In the provincial government’s recent throne speech, Premier Iain Rankin committed to accelerating the phase-out of coal for energy by 2030, 10 years ahead of what was originally planned. Results from our recent survey show that the majority of Nova Scotian residents support the idea. In fact, three-quarters of Nova Scotians indicate they support the phasing out of coal by 2030, with one-half who completely support the initiative (50%) and one-quarter mostly supporting it (25%). Only one in ten expressed some level of opposition (10%) and fourteen percent are unsure.
While the majority of Nova Scotians support phasing out coal by 2030, support is most pronounced in Halifax (82%) and lower among residents in the rest of mainland (71%) and Cape Breton (64%). Demographically, middle-aged residents 35-54 years are less likely to support the concept of phasing out coal by 2030, compared to either younger or older residents. Support for phasing out coal increases with residents’ education level.
