Three in ten Canadians have been tested at least once for the COVID-19 virus, while the majority of residents have not. Most residents seeking COVID-19 testing reported being asymptomatic at the time of testing.

Canadians are likely to get the COVID-19 vaccination if they have not already received it. One-quarter report having already received at least one dose of the vaccine.

With many provinces feeling the impact of a third-wave and public health officials increasingly reccomending routine asympomatic testing, how many Canadians have been tested for COVID-19? Results from our recent survey indicate that three in ten Canadians (31%) have been tested at least once, while the majority of residents have not been tested at all (69%). Across the country, Nova Scotia (42%) and Quebec (38%) residents are most likely to have been tested for the virus, while British Columbia residents are least likely (17%). Demographically, residents under the age of 35 are more likely to have been tested for COVID-19 at least once, compared to those ages 35 years and older. Higher-income earners are also more likely to have been tested.

Among those who were tested for COVID-19, two-thirds (64%) indicate that they were asymptomatic and did not have symptoms at the time of their test, while roughly one-third (36%) were displaying symptoms of the virus. Those in Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and BC are most likely to have had symptoms when they were tested.

With vaccinations rolling out across the country, we also wanted to understand how vaccination rates vary across the country, and how many of those who are unvaccinated plan to get the COVID-19 jab when it is available. Overall, over one-quarter (27%) of Canadians have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while six in ten Canadians (58%) say they will get the vaccine when it is available to them. Fifteen percent of residents say they have not received the vaccine and do not plan to.

Across the country, Newfoundland & Labrador (37%) and Quebec (33%) residents are most likely to have already received at least their first dose of the vaccine, while residents in Nova Scotia (15%) and New Brunswick (18%) are least likely to say they have. Those most inclined not to get vaccinated include those with lower household incomes (20%), or those with lower levels of education (44%).

Results are from an online survey conducted April 13-16, 2021, with 1,230 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

Questions included in this release include the following:

  • Have you had been tested to see if you have COVID-19?
  • Did you receive a COVID-19 test most recently because you were displaying symptoms of COVID-19, or were you asymptomatic when you had the test most recently?
  • Have you received either one or two rounds of a vaccination against COVID-19?
