This might be the year! Over one-half of Canadian residents think a Canadian team will win the Stanley Cup in the NHL this year, with one-quarter of those believing it will be the Toronto Maple Leafs.

March 19th, 2021

With the playoffs around the corner, we wanted to know who Canadian residents think will take home the Stanley Cup this year. New survey results indicate that over one-half (57%) of Canadians think it will be a Canadian team. Across the country, residents in Atlantic Canada (63%) are slightly more inclined to report this than those in the rest of the country, particularly those in British Columbia (52%).

The last time the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Cup was way back in 1967, thus the Leafs have been 53 consecutive years out in the cold. Nonetheless, hope springs eternal within ‘Leafs nation,’ as one-quarter (24%) of all adult Canadians believe the 2021 Cup victor will be the Leafs. Residents of Ontario (39%) and Atlantic Canada (32%) are most likely to indicate so. Across demographics, Gen-Z (37%) and male (29%) residents are most likely to mention the Maple Leafs.

Additionally, fourteen percent of Canadians believe the Montreal Canadiens will win, with residents of Quebec (36%) most likely to think so.

A handful of Canadians mention the Vancouver Canucks (4%), Edmonton Oilers (3%), or Winnipeg Jets (3%). Fewer mention the Calgary Flames (2%) or the Ottawa Senators (1%). Perhaps unsurprisingly, residents who are from a team’s province are more likely to believe they will win the Stanley Cup.

Results are from an online survey conducted February 18-23, 2021, with 1,230 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The questions included in this release was the following:

  • Do you think a Canadian team will win the Stanley Cup in the National Hockey League this year?
  • Which Canadian team do you think will win the Stanley Cup this year?
