Investment to improve standards for long-term care and assisstance to help seniors age at home garner the strongest support.

May 27th, 2021

Following the release of the federal government’s budget in April, residents were asked their level of support for various key aspects of the budget.

Results clearly indicate that Atlantic Canadians are focussed on helping to improve the lives of those in their communities, as the vast majority support a wide range of measures proposed in the recent federal budget. Nearly all residents support investments to improve standards for those living in long-term care (93%), and said they would support assistance for community-based organizations to provide support for low-income and vulnerable seniors to age at home, such as help with meal preparation, home maintenance and transportation (92%). A strong majority – 8 in 10 or more – support measures that would help primarily women and those on low incomes – namely plans to reduce fees for parents with children in regulated childcare by 50% on average, with a goal of reaching $10 per day by 2026, and a federal minimum wage of $15 per hour. Interestingly, women are more likely to support these measures compared with men.

Many businesses have been forced to implement layoffs or have paused growth plans during the pandemic, and the majority of Atlantic Canadians indicated that they support subsidies to eligible employers to make it easier for businesses to hire back workers, or bring in new ones (83%). Across Atlantic Canada, those residing in Newfoundland & Labrador and Nova Scotia are more likely to support this initiative.

This survey was conducted from May 6 – May 12, 2021 with 1,731 Atlantic Canadians from Narrative Research’s online panel, East Coast Voice. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.
