The vast majority of Atlantic Canadians feel the restrictions and closures throughout the pandemic have been necessary.

Atlantic Canadians largely support the actions taken by their provincial government and the federal government during the pandemic.

May 31st, 2021

With vaccination roll-out well underway, Atlantic Canadians were asked to what extent they support or oppose the actions taken by their provincial government and the federal government during the pandemic. Results show that Atlantic Canadians largely support the tough decisions and restrictive measures implemented over the past year. Approximately eighty percent (79%) say they support federal government actions taken during the pandemic, and even more 87% –  support their own provincial government’s actions to curb COVID-19’s spread over the last year.

More specifically, the vast majority agree that the restrictions put in place during the pandemic have been necessary to protect citizens (88%), and few – only 19% – agree that the restrictions put in place during the pandemic have compromised our rights too much. Across the Atlantic Canadian provinces, New Brunswick residents are less likely to support the federal or provincial government’s actions or agree that the restrictions put in place have been necessary to protect citizens. Otherwise, results are generally consistent across regions and demographic characteristics.

When it comes to businesses having to temporarily shut down, most believe that the mandatory closures and restrictions of businesses, including the closure of gyms, restaurants, hair salons and others at various points during the pandemic have been necessary to protect our collective health (86%).

This survey was conducted from May 6 – May 12, 2021 with 1,731 Atlantic Canadians from Narrative Research’s online panel, East Coast Voice. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.
