The proportion of pet owners in Canada remains unchanged from last year, though many pet owners have adopted additional pets, and many others are hoping to add a pet to their household in the future.

  • Current results confirm that just over half the population indicate being a pet owner.

Last year, we conducted a survey to better understand the proportions of Canadians with pets in their household. Current results confirm that just over half the population indicate being a pet owner. Interestingly, many among this group have added pets to their household or become new pet owners in the last year and a half. Indeed, a third of pet owners have welcomed a new pet into their home since the start of the pandemic, including 18% in the first half of the pandemic, and 15% in the last year. What is important to note is that of the 33 percent of pet owners who adopted a new pet during the pandemic, four in ten (39%) did not already have any other pets in their household, while the majority (61%) added an additional pet.

It is also noteworthy that two in ten Canadians express being likely to adopt a pet within the next year (18%).

Dogs and cats remain the most common types of pets that people have in their home, with six in ten households having at least one dog in their home (58%) and just fewer than six in ten having at least one cat in their home (56%). These results are similar to one year ago.

The majority of pet owners only have one type of pet in their home (68%), though one-quarter of households have two types (24%).

Results shown are from a survey conducted online November 15-17, 2021, with 2,000 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect these population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.
