The majority of Canadians support lifting the ban on blood donations from sexually active men who have sex with men. Minimal opposition to the change is evident.

July 13, 2022:

Recently, Health Canada approved Canadian Blood Services’ submission to eliminate the three-month blood donor deferral period for gay and bisexual men, as well as some others in the LGBTQ2S+ community. Moving away from a blanket ban, the national blood donor organization will screen all donors based on higher risk sexual behaviours, regardless of gender or sexuality.

Results from our recent survey indicate that most Canadians support this new change in policy on blood donations (59%), whereas fewer than two in ten oppose the change (17%). One quarter neither support nor oppose the change (14%) or offer no opinion (10%).

Overall support for the policy change is consistent across the provinces and across genders. However, women are more likely than men to feel more strongly of their support regarding the policy change. While support for the policy change increases with household income and education, the trend seems to be in reverse for age groups, whereby boomers are most likely to oppose lifting the ban on blood donations (23%).

These results are from a survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted online between June 27 and 29, 2022 with 1,230 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect these population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The question asked included the following:
