October 11, 2023

Over one year ago, just days before the US Supreme Court reversed the decision in Roe v. Wade, a significant legal precedent that paved the way to prevent access to abortion as a federal right in the United States, we asked Canadians their opinions regarding the right to choose a safe and legal abortion in this country. With increasing attacks on abortion rights in the US over the last year, and some public discussion of the topic in Canada, we wanted to find if public opinion has changed in the last year.

Results remain consistent with those of June 2022, with the majority of Canadians (80%; up 3 points) continuing to support a person’s right to choose a safe and legal abortion in Canada. More specifically, six in ten (59%) completely support it, while two in ten (21%) are mostly in support.  Meanwhile, approximately one in ten (13%; up 1 point) are opposed to having the option of a safe and legal abortion in this country. A small number (7%) refused to answer.

Overall, results are consistent across most regions and demographics, including gender. But when compared with last year, Atlantic Canadians are now more likely to support the right to a safe and legal abortion in Canada. Consistent with last year’s results, support for the right to an abortion increases with household income and the level of formal education.

Results are from an online survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted between September 12th and 14th, 2023, with 1,231 Canadians, 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census by gender, age, and region to reflect actual population distribution. As a non-probability sample a margin of error is not applied.

The question asked was:

To what extent do you support or oppose a person’s right to choose a safe and legal abortion in Canada?
