The majority of Canadians have worn a facial mask in the past month to protect themselves or others from transmissible diseases, including COVID-19.

  • At the time of our survey, one-third of Canadians said they had worn a mask as recently as that day.
  • One-quarter of Canadians last wore a mask more than a month ago.

September 28, 2022:

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, masking culture has evolved tremendously. Where masking was a rare occurrence pre-pandemic, in the last two and a half years Canadians have experienced varying degrees of mask-protocol including everything from masks being mandated by provincial governments in all public spaces, to masks only being required at certain venues, or when social distancing was not possible. Given that at present wearing a mask is largely up to individual choice, with the federal government dropping mask requirements on planes and trains this week, we thought it was time to check in with Canadians about just how recently they last wore a mask.

Results of our survey show that one-third of Canadians wore a mask as recently as the day of the survey to protect themselves against COVID-19 or other transmissible diseases (13% indicate they were wearing a mask at the time of answering the survey, while 20% wore a mask that same day). Another one-quarter indicate they most recently wore a mask in the last week, while one in eight note that they wore a mask in the past month. One-quarter indicate that the last time they wore a mask for protection was over a month ago. Only two percent of Canadians indicate they have never worn a mask.

Compared to those in other provinces, residents of Quebec and New Brunswick are most likely to indicate that the last time they wore a mask was over a month ago, while those in Newfoundland and Labrador are most likely to have worn a mask in the past month. Residents aged 55 and older as well as those who have a part-time employment status are also most likely compared to their respective counterparts to have worn a mask within the past month.

Results are from a survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted online between September 6 to 9 2022 with 1,230 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect actual population distribution. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The question asked was:
When was the last time you wore a mask to protect yourself or others from COVID-19 or other transmissible diseases?

  • I’m wearing a mask now!
  • Today
  • Within the last week
  • Within the last month
  • More than a month ago
  • I have never worn a mask
