The majority of Canadians completely or mostly support the right to choose a safe and legal abortion in Canada.

  • Six in ten Canadians completely support the right to choose a safe and legal abortion, while two in ten are mostly in support.

June 21, 2022:

Abortion in Canada was fully legalized in 1988 and remains legal across the country. The procedure is publicly funded, but access to resources remains varied by region. Given the current uncertainty surrounding the future of Roe v. Wade in the United States, we wanted to ask Canadians their opinion on the right to safe and legal abortion in this country. (As background, Roe v. Wade was a legal decision made in 1973 by the U.S. Supreme Court that effectively legalized abortion across the United States. Since then, some states have imposed their own restrictions on abortion. The Mississippi abortion law originially proposed in 2018 recently sparked discussion around whether Roe v. Wade is actually a right protected by the American Constitution.)

The majority of Canadians support the right to obtain a safe and legal abortion, with 60% saying they completely support this right, and 18% saying they only mostly support it. Six percent of Canadians said they mostly oppose the right, and another six percent said that they are completely opposed. Eleven percent of respondents said that they would prefer not to answer the question.

Support for abortion rights tends to increase with the level of formal education, and with household income. In addition, support for abortion rights is highest among Canadians who typically support the NDP, closely followed by those who typically support the Liberal Party, with close to nine in ten completely or mostly in support. Three quarters of those who typically support the Conservative Party of Canada are in support of the right to a safe and legal abortion. However, typical supporters of the PPC have the lowest amount of support for abortion rights, with six in ten of typical PPC supporters saying they completely or mostly support access to abortion.

Results shown are from a survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted online between May 17 and 19, 2022 with 1,234 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect these population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The question included in this press release is the following:

Given the current discussions in the US about the potential reversal of Roe v. Wade, to what extent do you support or oppose a person’s right to choose a safe and legal abortion in Canada?

  • Completely support
  • Mostly support
  • Mostly oppose
  • Completely oppose
  • Prefer not to answer
