Support and satisfaction remain high for King government.

HALIFAX, August 27, 2020: Satisfaction with the performance of the provincial government led by Premier Dennis King has declined slightly, although it is still very strong, according to the latest survey by Narrative Research.  Just over eight in ten Islanders express satisfaction with the provincial government (85%, down from a record high of 92% in May 2020).

Decided voter support for the PCs has returned to pre-pandemic levels, now at 48% (down from 54% in May 2020, and 45% in February 2020). Support for the Green Party is relatively steady at 25%, (vs 22% in May 2020), as is support for the Liberal Party (23%, vs 22% in May 2020). Support for the NDP sits at 4% (vs 1% in May 2020). Two in ten (19%) PEI voters are undecided, 6% refuse to state which party they support, and 3% do not plan to vote in the next provincial election or do not support any of these parties.

In terms of leadership preference, residents’ preference for PC leader Dennis King as premier is still above pre-pandemic levels, with just over four in ten Islanders voicing preference (45%, down from 53% in May 2020). Preference for the Green Party’s Peter Bevan-Baker as premier stands at 26% (up from 21% in May 2020). Meanwhile, interim Liberal leader Sonny Gallant is the choice of 9% (holding steady since May 2020), and 4% prefer NDP leader Joe Byrne (compared with 3% in May 2020). Fourteen percent of Islanders do not have a leadership preference, and 2% say they prefer none of the main party leaders.

These results are part of Narrative Research’s Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 301 adult Prince Edward Islanders, conducted from August 4 – 19, 2020, with overall results accurate to within ±5.7 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
