One-third of Canadians have had one or more asymptomatic rapid COVID-19 tests performed at some point since the pandemic began, while the majority of residents have not.

June 2, 2021

In some provinces, residents are being encouraged to frequently get an asymptomatic rapid COVID-19 test in an effort to minimize the spread. Results from our recent survey indicate that one-third of Canadians (33%) have been tested at least once, while the majority of residents have not been tested at all (63%) and four percent of Canadians do not have asymptomatic testing available where they live. Across the country, Nova Scotians (48%) are most likely to have been tested for the virus, while New Brunswick (9%) and Newfoundland & Labrador (18%) residents are least likely. Demographically, residents under the age of 35 are more likely to have been tested for COVID-19 at least once, compared to those ages 35 years and older. Higher income earners are also more likely to have been tested.

Results are from an online survey conducted May 19-21, 2021, with 1,232 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

Question included in this release:

  • In some provinces, rapid testing for COVID-19 is widely available for those with no symptoms. Since the pandemic began, how often, if ever, have you had an asymptomatic test for COVID-19?
