In February 2022, the federal government declared a national state of emergency and invoked the Emergencies Act in response to the Freedom Convoy blockade in Downtown Ottawa. We wanted to know if Canadians were satisfied or dissatisfied with this decision.

National survey results show that the majority of Canadians (68%) express some degree of satisfaction with regards to the Emergencies Act being invoked, with one-third indicating complete satisfaction. That said, one-third of Canadians express dissatisfaction with the use of the Emergencies Act in this situation.

Across demographics, those in the Prairies are more likely to be completely dissatisfied with the decision to invoke the Emergencies Act, as are Canadian males. Across age groups, older Canadians are more likely to support the decision, while younger residents tend to have more moderate opinions on the topic.

Results are from an online survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted between December 8 and 10, 2022 with 2,237 Canadians, 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s online Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect actual population distribution, and data tables are available upon request.
