Most Canadians continue to be concerned about inflation and the rising cost of living.

December 6, 2022:

Results from our recent survey show that Canadians continue to be worried about current issues affecting the economy and the cost of living. Findings are unchanged since this was last asked in September. A strong majority are concerned about inflation, and three-quarters of Canadians are also worried about supply chain issues as well as the potential impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Canada’s economy. Meanwhile, seven in ten are wary about the availability of affordable housing.

Inflation and rising cost of living remain key concerns that are troubling to Canadians across all demographics. While concerns about supply chain issues increase with age, those who are worried about the availability of affordable housing are likely to be younger and have lower incomes, with Gen Z, Millennials, and lower-income earners (L.T. $60K) being the most concerned about their housing. Of note, women are more likely than men to be concerned about the availability of affordable housing, and perhaps unsurprisingly, renters and those with employment affected by COVID are also more likely to be worried about the issue. Interestingly, residents in Quebec are least worried about the availability of affordable housing.

Results are from a survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted online between November 8 and 11, 2022 with 1,243 Canadians, 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect actual population distribution. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The question asked was:
How concerned are you about the following issues?

  • Supply chain issues
  • The impact of inflation and rising cost of living
  • The potential impact of Russia’s invasion on Ukraine on Canada’s economy
  • Availability of affordable housing
