Most Canadians are concerned about inflation and the rising cost of living.

October 11, 2022:

Findings from our recent survey show that Canadians are showing significant concern about current issues affecting the economy and the cost of living. The vast majority are concerned about inflation, and three-quarters of Canadians are also worried about supply chain issues as well as the potential impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Canada’s economy. Finally, seven-in-ten are concerned about the availability of affordable housing.

Inflation and rising cost of living is a concern that is consistent across all demographics. Canadians aged 55+ are more likely than their younger counterparts to be concerned about the impacts of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Canada’s economy and those with household incomes less than $100,000 are more concerned with the availability of affordable housing compared with Canadians with higher household incomes. In terms of regions, residents of Ontario are most concerned about supply chain issues and those living in Quebec are the least concerned.

Results are from a survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted online between September 6 and 9, 2022 with 1,230 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect actual population distribution. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The question asked was:

How concerned are you about the following issues?

  • Supply chain issues
  • The impact of inflation and rising cost of living
  • The potential impact of Russia’s invasion on Ukraine on Canada’s economy
  • Availability of affordable housing
