- King’s PC government rounds out the year with a record high level of support.
- PCs and Greens drop slightly in terms of decided votership, with Liberals picking up the difference
- Gap between King and Bevan-Baker for leadership preference widens slightly.
HALIFAX, December 10, 2019: At the end of the year, satisfaction with the performance of the provincial government led by Premier Dennis King is very strong, according to the latest survey by Narrative Research.
Three-quarters of Islanders cite satisfaction with King’s current provincial government (77%), making this the highest satisfaction level since Robert Ghiz’s Liberals held a 77% rating in 2008.
Despite overwhelming satisfaction with the government, decided voter support has shifted slightly, with the PC party down 7% since the summer (38%, down from 45%). The Green Party is also down 8% (29%, down from 37%). The gains in both cases primarily go to new Liberal leader Sonny Gallant’s party, who jumped 10% since August (26%, up from 16%), although the NDP also enjoyed an increase of 5 percentage points.
Twenty percent of PEI voters are undecided, 7% refuse to state which party they support, and 3% do not support any of these leaders or do plan to vote in the next provincial election.
In terms of leadership preference, Dennis King holds steady at 36%, which has been relatively consistent since May. Peter Bevan-Baker of the Green Party shifts from 33% in August to 30%, while newly appointed Sonny Gallant of the Liberals captures 11%. NDP leader Joe Byrne is the choice of 4%.
Fifteen percent of Islanders do not have a leadership preference, and 4% say they prefer none of the main party leaders.
These results are part of Narrative Research’s Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 600 adult Prince Edward Islanders, conducted from November 1 – 28, 2019, with overall results accurate to within ± 4.0 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times. *(The sample of 423 decided voters is accurate to within ± 4.8 percentage points, 95 times out of 100.)
