We recently asked Canadians in our national poll which flavour of potato chips they think is Canada’s signature potato chip flavour, and results find that almost one half (46%) of Canadians believe it’s ketchup. Other chip flavours are only chosen by just over one in ten each, including BBQ (13%), salt and vinegar (12%), and all dressed (12%). About one in ten (13%) are unsure which flavour to choose.
Notably, a smaller proportion of residents in Quebec (34%) choose ketchup, compared to the rest of the provinces where close to one-half of residents choose this flavour. Quebec residents are more likely to name BBQ (29%) compared to other provinces where it is only chosen by about one in ten. Gen Z residents are the most likely to choose ketchup chips (71%), while boomers are the least likely to have chosen this flavour (33%), and the most likely to have said they weren’t sure which chip flavour would be Canada’s emblematic chip flavour (20%, compared with 12% or fewer among younger generations). As well, residents who have lived in Canada for less than ten years are more likely to say that BBQ (27%) or all dressed chips (23%) are the signature flavour, compared to other residents who have lived in the country longer (over one in ten choosing each flavour).
Results are from an online survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted between November 6-8, 2024 with 1,230 Canadians from the Logit Group’s online Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2021 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect actual population distribution. For more information, please contact:
