Halifax Residents are more likely to purchase from companies that are local and those that support local charities.

  • Three-quarters of residents are more likely to purchase goods or services from a company if it supports local charities.

November 27, 2019: Halifax-area residents clearly want to support local companies, and those that support charities in their community, and say they want to put their money behind it. The vast majority of residents say they are more likely to purchase goods or services from a company that is local or that supports local charities, according to a new survey conducted by Narrative Research.

This survey reveals that approximately nine in ten Halifax Regional Municipality residents (86%) are more likely to purchase from a local company, while one-in-ten residents (11%) are as likely to purchase from local companies as they are to purchase from companies that are not local. In addition, three in four residents (74%) are more likely to purchase goods or services from a company that supports local charities, while one-sixth (17%) are as likely to purchase from companies that support local charities as they are to purchase from companies that do not.

Likelihood to purchase from companies that support local charities varies by age, with younger residents (aged 18 to 34) being comparatively more inclined than older residents to buy from a company that supports local charities (82% of those aged 18-34, versus 70% of those 35 or older).

“Residents are clearly locally-minded and hold social responsibility as a core value,” says Margaret Chapman, COO & Partner.

The survey results are part of Narrative Research’s Urban Report, an independent quarterly telephone survey in the Maritimes’ major cities. These questions on likelihood of purchase with regards to purchasing local were asked of 400 adult Halifax-area residents from October 24 to November 10, 2019. Results are considered accurate to within +/- 4.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
