As the summer begins, Canadian residents are considering how they will spend their vacations. Results suggest that, compared to last June, Canadians are far more inclined to travel, assuming regulations allow it.

Overall, one-half of Canadians (49%) are likey to travel this summer, regardless of vacation type.  More specifically, four in ten Canadians are likely to take a driving vacation to another province this summer (40%, compared to 24% in June 2020), while one-quarter (24%, compared to 14% in June 2020) are likely to fly to another province. Meanwhile, a similar number plan to travel to the US (24%, compared to 10% in June 2020).

Across the country, travel intentions vary by province. Residents of the Prairies and New Brunswick are more likely to take a driving vacation to another province, while those in Ontario are more likely to take a flying vacation to another province in Canada or to travel to the US. Quebec residents are less likely to have any travel plans this summer.

Younger residents (Millennials) are more likely than older residents (Boomers) to plan any type of summer vacation. Gen-Z residents are also more likely to consider a driving trip to another province. Those expressing some likelihood to vacation were asked how safe they would feel taking that vacation given the pandemic, if regulations allow.  Regardless of vacation type, at least two-thirds choosing to travel feel some degree of safety in doing so, although safety levels vary by travel type. Compared to last June, perceptions of safety have increased notably. Results show higher perceived levels of safety expressed by those driving to another province, compared to either flying within Canada or traveling to the U.S.

Results are from an online survey conducted June 16 – 18, 2021, with 1,231 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.
