Half of Canadians are concerned about monkeypox to some extent, while three in ten are unconcerned.

August 25, 2022:

As countries across the globe continue to face the COVID-19 pandemic, another viral outbreak – Monkeypox has made its way to Canada, with the first reported case in the spring and over a thousand reported cases throughout the country this summer. The Public Health Agency of Canada continues to collect and analyze epidemiological information to help define the scope of spread and the risks to people living in this country. Given the severe impact COVID-19 had on the world, we assessed the level of concern Canadians have regarding the monkeypox outbreak.

Results indicate that just over one-half of Canadians (53%) are concerned about the monkeypox outbreak to some extent, while three in ten are unconcerned (28%). Meanwhile, two in ten are indifferent or unsure about the subject (19%).

When compared to women, men are more likely to be unconcerned with the outbreak (24% and 32% respectively). While the level of concern is consistent across the Canadian regions, younger residents, such as Gen Z and Millennials are more likely to be extremely concerned compared to their counterparts, Gen X and Boomers.

Results are from a survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted online between August 2 and 4, 2022 with 1,233 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect actual population distribution. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The question asked was:
How concerned are you about the Monkeypox outbreak, which was declared as a global health emergency by the WHO (World Health Organization)?

  • Extremely concerned
  • Somewhat concerned
  • Neither
  • Somewhat unconcerned
  • Not at all concerned
  • Not sure
