Despite opposition to the games, two thirds of Canadians intend to watch the events in the coming weeks.

July 23, 2021

Last month Narrative Research / Logit found that only 32% of Canadians supported the Olympic Games taking place this summer, but despite that low support, two thirds now say they will be watching the events, at least to some extent, over the coming weeks.

Half intend to watch either some of the Games (37%) or will be glued to their TVs (12%), while two-in-ten will watch the highlights. A few indicate they won’t watch but will read about it after the fact (6%). Overall, two in ten are not interested in watching at all (21%) and a few aren’t sure (6%).

Atlantic Canadians are more likely to say they are not interested compared with the rest of Canada. Millennials are more likely to say they will be glued to their TVs. Male residents are more likely to be interested in watching compared with females.

Results are from an online survey conducted July 13 – 15, 2021, with 1,231 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

Questions included in this release include the following:

  • Do you intend to watch this summer’s Olympic Games, being held in Tokyo from July 23 – August 8?
