With summer just around the corner, we wanted to find out Canadians’ favourite ice cream flavour. Results show that the most popular is chocolate flavoured ice cream (13%), closely followed by one in ten each that favour vanilla (11%), mint chocolate (10%), maple walnut (10%), and butterscotch (8%). Seven percent each mention cookie dough and cookies and cream, whereas fewer prefer strawberry (5%), moose tracks (4%), Neapolitan (3%), or moon mist (1%). Of note, five percent each don’t eat ice cream or have no preference in terms of its flavour.

Chocolate and vanilla-flavoured ice creams are most preferred among men and those from Quebec, whereas mint chocolate is most preferred among Generation Z (ages 18-24) and Generation X (aged 35-54). Interestingly, mentions of maple walnut and butterscotch increase with age; conversely, preference for cookies and cream flavoured ice cream decreases with age. In addition, there are regional differences among Atlantic Canadians, whereby butterscotch flavoured ice cream is most preferred by New Brunswick residents, whereas moon mist flavoured ice cream is most preferred among Nova Scotians.

Results shown are from a survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted online between April 12 and 19, 2022 with 1,239 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect these population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The question included in this press release included the following:

With summer just around the corner (hopefully), what is your favourite ice-cream flavour?
