Canadians hold mixed opinions when considering Justin Trudeau’s future as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

January 10, 2023

Justin Trudeau has been Canada’s Prime Minister since 2015, and despite the challenges of the past few years, he remains optimistic about the future. However, we wanted to know what level of support Justin Trudeau has as he approaches his ten-year anniversary as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

National survey results show that Canadians opinions are mixed when considering Trudeau’s future as Party leader. One-third of Canadians believe Justin Trudeau should stay on and run again as the Liberal Party leader in the next federal election. On the other hand, nearly one-half think he should step down as leader before the next federal election, while two in ten Canadians are unsure.

Across demographics, males are more likely to believe that Trudeau should step down as leader before the next election. Meanwhile, Canadians aged 18-24 are more likely to be unsure of their opinion. Across the country, differences in opinion are evident, with those in the Prairies being more likely (57%) to believe Trudeau should step down as leader before the next federal election.

Results are from an online survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted between December 8 and 10, 2022 with 2,237 Canadians, 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s online Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect actual population distribution, and data tables are available upon request.

The question asked was:

Justin Trudeau has served as Canada’s Prime Minister since 2015. All things considered, do you believe Mr. Trudeau should run again as leader of the Liberal Party in the next federal election, or do you believe that he should step down and allow someone else to lead the Liberal Party into the next election?

– Justin Trudeau should stay on and run as the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada in the next federal election

– Justin Trudeau should step down as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada before the next federal election

– Not sure
