Canadians have mixed opinions about the removal of mask mandates for travel.

  • Over one-half support the decision to make wearing masks on planes and trains optional.
  • Four in ten are against this change in travel requirements.

October 25, 2022:

Given recent changes by the Government of Canada to no longer require masks for travel, we wanted to understand how Canadians feel about masks now being optional on planes and trains. Results show mixed opinions, whereby over one-half are in support of the removal of mandatory requirements (57%), compared to four in ten who are opposed to it (40%). The level of support and resistance are almost equally split as well, with one-third who completely support the change in travel requirements (34%), while two in ten each somewhat support (22%), somewhat oppose (20%), and completely oppose the change (20%).

Younger Canadians (Gen-X and Millennials) are more likely to be in support of the removal of mask mandates for travel, compared to Boomers who are more likely to be opposed to this change. Also, men are more likely to support having the decision to wear masks optional on planes and trains compared to women.

Results are from a survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted online between October 11 to 13, 2022 with 1,235 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect actual population distribution. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The question asked was:
As you may be aware, as of October 1st, Canada no longer requires masks to be worn on planes and trains. Other changes for international travel were also introduced. To what extent do you support or oppose each of the following: The decision to make wearing masks on planes and trains optional

  • Somewhat support

  • Completely oppose
  • Not sure
