The Liberals lead in voter support, with the gap between the Liberals and the PCs widening.

  • On par with last quarter, a majority are satisfied with the performance of the provincial government led by Andrew Furey.
  • Andrew Furey continues to lead as the preferred choice of Premier.

Newfoundland and Labrador – August 23, 2024:

A majority are satisfied with the overall performance of the provincial government led by Premier Andrew Furey, according to the latest survey by Narrative Research. Over one-half of residents (57%, compared with 53% in May 2024) are satisfied, while under four in ten (37%, compared with 41%) are dissatisfied. Satisfaction is elevated among residents in Central/Eastern NL compared with elsewhere in the province.

The Liberals lead among decided voters. If a provincial election were held today, over four in ten decided voters would support the Liberals (43%, compared with 38% in May 2024), while one-third would support the PCs (35%, compared with 41%). Two in ten would support the NDP (19%, unchanged). Few would support the Green Party (1%, compared with 0%). Support for the Liberals increases with age (18-34: 25%, 35-54: 37%, 55+: 54%) and is highest among residents in Central/Eastern NL and lowest among those in Western/Labrador.

Andrew Furey of the Liberal Party remains the preferred choice for Premier. Four in ten prefer Furey for premier (38%, compared with 33% in May 2024), while one-quarter prefer Tony Wakeham of the PC Party (26%, unchanged), and 16% prefer NDP leader Jim Dinn (compared with 18%). Similar to support for the Liberals, support for Furey is higher among older residents aged 55+, while support for Wakeham is higher among those aged 35-54, and younger residents are more likely to vote for Dinn.

These results are part of Narrative Research’s Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent, quarterly telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are drawn from a sample of 350 adult residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. The survey was conducted August 6-16, 2024, with overall results accurate to within ±5.2 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times. The results are weighted by region, age and gender to reflect the overall Newfoundland and Labrador adult population.
