A majority of Canadians are opposed to the trucker protest in Ottawa.

  • Nearly two-thirds of Canadians are opposed to the trucker protests in Ottawa, while approximately one-quarter are in support.

February 16, 2022

For the past few weeks it has been hard to avoid news articles and headlines related to the trucker convoy that has been taking place in parts of Ottawa, protesting COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions. In addition, there have been similar displays happening in other regions of the country. For the first time in history, the Prime Minister has enacted the Emergencies Act to give law enforcement more tools to control the situation.

With the near constant media attention this demonstration has been getting, we asked Canadians how they feel about the protests. Overall, just over one-quarter of Canadians (28%) are in support of the trucker convoy in Ottawa, while a much larger two-thirds (63%) are in opposition. Across provinces levels of support are relatively consistent, though complete opposition is strongest in Quebec.

When looking across demographics, support varies in terms of age and education level. Across age groups, support is greatest among younger Canadians – those under the age of 35 – while lowest among those aged 55 and older. As well, support is highest among those with lower levels of formal education. It is also of note that those who rent their home, as opposed to own it, are more likely to be in support of the protests.

Results shown are from a survey conducted online between February 11 and 13, 2022, with 1,232 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect these population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The question included in this press release was the following:

A convoy of truckers recently has set up in downtown Ottawa, protesting COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions. How do you feel about the trucker convoy in Ottawa?
