Satisfaction with the performance of the provincial government hits a record low.

  • The Liberals lead in terms of voting intentions.

New Brunswick – August 23, 2024:

A majority of New Brunswickers express dissatisfaction with the performance of the provincial government led by Premier Blaine Higgs, according to the latest survey by Narrative Research. Two-thirds of residents (67%, compared with 63% in May 2024) are currently dissatisfied with the government’s overall performance, while one-quarter (26%, compared with 29%) are satisfied. A majority are dissatisfied across regions and demographics.

When considering voting intentions, the Liberals gain a lead in terms of support from decided voters. If an election were held today, over four in ten would vote for the Liberals (44%, up from 37% in May 2024), while one-third would vote for the PCs (33%, compared with 34%). Support for the Green Party stands at 17% (compared with 13%), while support for the NDP has declined (4%, down from 13%). The People’s Alliance of New Brunswick has the backing of 1% of decided voters (unchanged). Support for the Liberals is higher among those whose first language is French and outside Southern NB, while support for the PCs is stronger among those whose first language is English.

Susan Holt of the Liberal Party remains most preferred for Premier. Holt is preferred by three in ten (29%, compared with 25% in May 2024). David Coon of the Green Party (19%, compared with 15%) and Blaine Higgs of the Progressive Conservative Party (17%, compared with 20%) are virtually tied. A small minority prefer either Alex White of the NDP (5%, compared with 7%) or Rick DeSaulniers of the People’s Alliance of New Brunswick 4%, compared with 3%).  Susan Holt has a stronger lead among those whose first language is French and those 55 or older. Regionally, Holt is more preferred in Moncton and area compared with Southern NB.

These results are part of Narrative Research’s Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are drawn from a random sample of 400 adult New Brunswickers, conducted from July 31-August 17, 2024, with overall results accurate to within ± 4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times. The results are weighted by region, age, and gender to reflect the overall New Brunswick adult population.
