Nearly one half of Canadians have made resolutions or goals for 2023.

  • Three-quarters of resolutions are health-related (e.g., exercising more, changing eating habits, etc.)
  • More than one-half of Canadians are confident they’ll reach their 2023 goal(s)

January 26, 2023

January is a time when people typically set intentions or goals for the new year.

Our national survey results show that nearly one-half (46%) of Canadians have made resolutions for this new year, up 13 points from last year (2022). Of those who did make resolutions for 2023, three-quarters (75%) say they are health related goals, six in ten (59%) indicate their goal is financial, three in ten (28%) cite a relationship-goal and one-quarter (26%) report a hobby related goal.

Across demographics, Canadians 34 years of age and under are more likely to have made a resolution for 2023 compared to those who are older. However, Canadians aged 55 and older are also least likely to have made a financial resolution if they made any kind of resolution for 2023. In addition, women more commonly made a health related goal, both this year and last.

Furthermore, we asked Canadians how confident they are about accomplishing their goal for this year. Positively, six in ten (59%) indicated they are confident they will achieve their intended resolution. Confidence levels are similar across gender, age, and income. Meanwhile, across Atlantic provinces, those in New Brunswick are most confident about their ability to complete their resolution.

Finally, when asked about the outcome of their 2022 resolution, one-half indicated that their resolution worked and they achieved their goal last year, while one-third said the resolution started strong but they didn’t end up sticking with it. Across demographics, men were more likely to have said they accomplished their 2022 goal.

Results are from an online survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted between January 10 and 13, 2023 with 1,231 Canadians, 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s online Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect actual population distribution, and data tables are available upon request.
