- Close to one-half of Canadians overall do not support any of the proposed candidates in becoming the next leader of the federal Conservative Party.
- Supporters of the Conservative Party of Canada are most likely to prefer Pierre Poilievre as the next party leader.
June 8, 2022
Ahead of the election for the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) on September 10th, 2022, we asked Canadians which candidate they prefer. When Canadians are considered overall, nearly one-half are not in favour of any of the current candidates (47%). Among those who chose one of the listed contenders, Canadians were most likely to prefer either Jean Charest (20%) or Pierre Poilievre (18%). Less popular are Patrick Brown (8%), Leslyn Lewis (3%), Scott Aitchison (2%), and Roman Baber (2%).
Among supporters of the Conservative Party, preferences shift. Conservative supporters are most likely to support Pierre Poilievre as the next party leader (45%), and only two in ten indicate that they would not choose any of the listed candidates (21%). Jean Charest is less preferred among supporters of the CPC than among Canadians in general (14%), and one in ten Conservative supporters prefer Patrick Brown (10%). Leslyn Lewis (4%), Scott Aitchison (4%) and Roman Baber (1%) are least preferred among supporters of the CPC.
When age is considered, young Canadians aged 18-24 are most likely to indicate that they would not choose any of the current candidates, while Canadians aged 55+ are most likely to indicate that their preferred candidate is one of those in the running. Older Canadians (55+) are also most likely to prefer Jean Charest compared to younger Canadians and tend to prefer him compared to other contenders by a large margin. In addition, women are more likely than men to note that they do not prefer any of the candidates, and likelihood of answering ‘none of the above’ also increases as household income decreases. Across provinces, there is little variation in terms of support for candidates.
Results shown are from a survey conducted in partnership between Narrative Research and the Logit Group. The survey was conducted online between May 17 and 19, 2022 with 1,234 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Data were weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect these population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.
