Most Canadians support the government aiding Ukraine in its war with Russia, though optimism is low that Ukraine will be able to withstand Russia’s invasion.

  • Nine-in-ten Canadians support their government aiding Ukraine in its war with Russia.
  • The rise of gasoline price because of sanctions against Russia has no significant effect on residents’ feelings about Canada supporting Ukraine.
  • Only one-third of Canadians believe that Ukraine will be able to withstand Russia’s invasion and remain a sovereign country, while one-quarter do not, and four in ten are unsure.
  • Just over one-half support Canada sending troops to Ukraine.

March 17, 2022

On February 24th, Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In response to the rapidly evolving situation, the Government of Canada has indicated a commitment to support Ukraine through various means. As part of our most recent survey in partnership with the Logit Group, we sought to better understand Canadians’ opinions on this topic.

Results show that the vast majority (88%) of Canadians support their government’s decision to support Ukraine in its war with Russia. That said, opinions vary somewhat by age, with residents aged 55 and older being more likely to support Canada’s decision (94% compared to 86% of Millennials, 85% of Gen Z and 84% of Gen X). Support also increases with education (91% of those who have at least some university education are in support compared to 78% of those with less than a highschool education).

One of the ways Canada, as well as other countries, have been supporting Ukraine is through economic sanctions against Russia. While not the only factor influencing the rising price of fuel, it has been a contributor. Results also reveal that the vast majority (85%) are still in support of Canada’s aid to Ukraine despite the rising costs of fuel that come as a result.

Results show that only one-third (34%) of Canadians believe that Ukraine will be able to withstand Russia’s invasion and remain a sovereign country, one-quarter (26%) do not believe Ukraine will be able to withstand the invasion, and four-in-ten (40%) are unsure about the outcome of the war. Those aged 18 to 34 are more likely to believe that Ukraine will win the war (42% compared to 32% of Gen X and 29% of Boomers), as are males (39% compared to 29% of females).

Lastly, Canadians were asked their level of support for sending troops to Ukraine and becoming actively involved in the war effort. While a complicated issue, just over half are in support of this type of action, while four-in-ten are opposed to any extent. Results in this regard are highly similar across demographic subgroups.

Results are from an online survey conducted March 11 – 14, 2022, with over 1,233 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

The questions included in this press release were the following:

  • On February 24th, Russia began a full-scale of invasion into the Ukraine. Based on what you have read or heard, do you think that Ukraine will be able to withstand Russia’s invasion and remain a sovereign country?
  • To what extent do you support or oppose Canada supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia?
  • Do you support or oppose Canada continuing to support Ukraine in its war with Russia, even considering that the sanctions against Russia result in considerably higher gasoline prices at the pumps for Canadian consumers?
  • Do you support or oppose Canada sending troops to Ukraine and becoming actively involved in the war in that country?
