- Support for a vaccine passport requirement is strongest for airline travel and slightly lower for restaurant dining.
October 4, 2021
Vaccine passports continue to be widely discussed, with many provinces rolling out vaccine passport mandates. Results from our recent survey suggest that there is widespread support among Canadians for a vaccine passport or proof of vaccination for various in-person activities. Canadians are most likely to support a vaccine passport requirement for airline travel, garnering the support of over eight in ten residents. Over three-quarters of Canadians endorse a proof of vaccination requirement for attending live sporting or arts events indoors, while slightly fewer support the same for working out at a gym. Support is slightly lower for a mandatory vaccine passport to dine at a restaurant, albeit still receiving support from most Canadians.
Public support for mandatory vaccine passports has grown in recent months, particularly in relation to airline travel. More specifically, in April 2021, when Canadians were first asked if they believed Canada should require someone to have a vaccine passport for air travel and public events, just over seven in ten (73%) expressed support. In June support increased to more than three-quarters (77%). Currently, 85% endorse a mandatory vaccine passport for travel on planes.
Support for a mandatory vaccine passport for airline travel is generally unanimous across the county. That said, support varies somewhat for proof of vaccination requirements for other in-person activities. Residents in the Prairies are less likely to support a vaccine passport for attending live sporting or arts events indoors, working out a gym, or dining at a restaurant, particularly compared to residents of British Columbia who are most likely to express support. Across the population, those 55 years and older are more likely to support a vaccine passport requirement for any of the in-person activities, as are residents with higher levels of education.
Results are from an online survey conducted September 13–16, 2021, with 1,231 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.
The questions included in this press release were the following:
- In general, do you think the government should require someone to have a vaccine passport or proof of vaccination?
- To travel on planes
- To attend live sporting or arts events indoors
- To dine at a restaurant
