On July 6th Mary Simon was named as the next Governor General of Canada and will be the Country’s first Indigenous person to serve in the role. To understand Canadians’ perceptions, we asked to what extent they support or oppose Simon’s appointment. Results are highly positive, with three-quarters (76%) of Canadians indicating they completely or mostly support this appointment, while fewer than one in ten (7%) oppose it to some degree. Additionally, sixteen percent of Canadians were unsure.
Despite the controversy surrounding the soon-to-be Governer General’s lack of fluency in French, support in Quebec is comparable to other parts of the country. While regional results are not significantly different, residents of British Columbia (82%) and Atlantic Canada (80%) offer slightly higher levels of support. Across demographics, Gen-Z (85%) and Boomers (80%) are more likely to support Simon’s appointment compared to Gen-Xers (71%).
Results are from an online survey conducted July 13 – 15, 2021, with 1,231 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.
