While one-third of Canadians support the Olympic Games taking place this summer, a larger proportion of Canadians oppose it.

June 25, 2021

Originally postponed in the summer of 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic, Japan is now set to host the summer Olympic Games beginning in July. Although no foreign spectators will be allowed at the event, it will be televised. We wanted to understand Canadians’ feelings about the Olympic Games taking place this summer. Results from our recent survey suggest that one-third (32%) of Canadians support the Games taking place this summer, providing a rating of 7-10 on a scale where 1 is “completely oppose”, and 10 is “completely support”. Meanwhile, two in ten Canadians are on the fence (21%), and nearly four in ten are opposed (38%).

Across the country, residents from the Atlantic Provinces, and Nova Scotians (21%) in particular, are least likely to support the Olympic Games taking place this summer, while Quebec residents (36%) are most likely to offer their support. Demographically, Canadian Millenials (age 25-34) are most likely to support the Games taking place, while Canadian Baby Boomers (age 55+) are least likely to express support. Men are also more likely than women to support the Olympic Games taking place this summer, and support tends to increase with household income.

Additionally, support for the Olympic Games taking place this summer is notably higher among residents who have not received their COVID-19 vaccine, and among those who are opposed to the idea of a ‘vaccine passport’.

Results are from an online survey conducted June 16 – 18, 2021, with 1,231 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.
