Canadians mention a variety of people who will be the first person they hug once COVID-19 restrictions loosen, but most commonly mention their mother, followed by a friend.

June 4, 2021

With provinces announcing their plans to re-open, many Canadians are expecting gathering restrictions to loosen in the coming months, allowing residents to see friends and family they previously were unable to due to the pandemic. With these loosened restrictions on the horizon, we wanted to know who Canadians expect they will be hugging first when they are able to gather more freely. Results from our recent survey indicate two in ten Canadians plan to hug their mother (21%) before anyone else, while a similar portion says the first person they will hug is a friend (18%). One in ten Canadians say a sibling (10%) will be the first person they hug, while slightly fewer residents report their father (5%) or partner (5%). Other residents mention hugging a grandmother (3%), cousin (2%), coworker (1%), aunt (1%), grandfather (1%) or uncle (1%). Two in ten say there is no one that they are planning on hugging first (21%).

Across the country, results are fairly consistent. Demographically, residents between the age of 25 to 54  more likely to mention their mother, compared to those under the age of 25 years, who are more likely to mention their friends.

Results are from an online survey conducted May 19-21, 2021, with 1,232 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.

Question included in this release:

  • It is expected that gathering restrictions will loosen in the coming months. Following those restrictions being loosened, and when you can gather more freely with friends and family, who is the first person you will hug?
