Four in ten Atlantic Canadians have watched more movies at home since the pandemic began. A strong majority of residents plan to return to the movie theatre once the pandemic is over.

  • Most residents have not seen any of the Oscar nominated films for Best Picture.

The pandemic has changed many of our entertainment options, so we wanted to find out if residents have been more avid movie-watchers or less, in the last year, as well as if their plans are to return to movie theatres (or not). Results from our most recent survey suggest that a notable proportion of Atlantic Canadians are watching more movies at home since the pandemic. In fact, four in ten residents indicate they have been watching more movies (43%), while a similar portion indicate it’s been about the same (43%).  Only a handful of residents have watched fewer movies since the pandemic (7%).

Across the region, PEI residents (35%) are less likely to have watched more movies since the pandemic began compared to NL residents (48%). Demographically, the number of movies watched increases with age, with residents over the age of 55 watching slightly more movies.

Once movie theatres are re-opened, the majority of residents who watch movies will return to the theatre. Indeed, seven in ten residents plan to watch movies at a theatre and watch movies at home (70%). There is a notable percentage of residents who say they will only watch movies at home (29%).

Results are consistent across the Atlantic provinces. Demographically, lower-income earners and residents over the age of 55 are less likely to return to the movie theatre and are more likely to only watch movies at home.

With the Oscars just over a week away, we found out, too, how many of the nominees have been viewed by residents. Most Atlantic Canadians have not seen any of the Oscar-nominated films for Best Picture (86%), while just over one in ten (14%) have done so. Residents are most likely to have seen The Trial of the Chicago 7, while few have seen any other nominated film, including Promising Young Woman, Mank, The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Nomadland, Minari and Sound of Metal.

The questions included in this release was the following:

  • Since the pandemic began, how would you describe the number of movies you have watched at home?
  • Once the pandemic is over and movie theatres are re-opened, will you…
  • Which of the Oscar nominated films for Best Picture have you seen?
