Results from the most recent Urban Report Survey show rising consumer confidence across three urban centres despite declining satisfaction with municipal governments.

  • Halifax has the strongest level of consumer confidence (105.4), followed by Moncton (103.2) and Fredericton (102.8).
  • Satisfaction with the performance of municipal government has declined in Halifax, Fredericton, and Moncton.

HALIFAX, NS January 14, 2020: Consumer confidence is strong and growing across three major centres in Atlantic Canada. Halifax residents show the highest consumer confidence, according to the most recent Urban Report survey conducted by Narrative Research. Meanwhile, consumer confidence among both Moncton and Fredericton residents has revived after the dip observed in May 2019. The consumer confidence index (CCI) is based on five questions asked of residents regarding the economic health of their city and their households. Specifically, the Halifax consumer confidence index stands at 105.4 (compared with 102.0 six months ago); the Moncton consumer confidence index stands at 103.2 (compared with 98.9 six months ago); and the Fredericton consumer confidence index stands at 102.8 (compared with 98.8 six months ago).

Residents in Halifax, Moncton, and Fredericton were also asked their level of satisfaction with the performance of their municipal government. Two in three residents in Halifax Regional Municipality are satisfied with the performance of Council under Mayor Mike Savage’s leadership. Satisfaction with the City Council in Halifax has somewhat declined this quarter compared to that observed three months ago, in August 2019 (67%, down from 75%). Meanwhile, under six in ten (57%) Moncton residents are satisfied with the performance of their municipal government under Mayor Dawn Arnold this quarter, compared with 65 percent of residents expressing satisfaction in February 2019. The percentage of Fredericton residents satisfied with their municipal government under Mayor Mike O’Brien has dropped to 56 percent, marking the lowest level recorded since August 2018, down from 69 percent in February 2019.

The survey results are part of Narrative Research’s Urban Report, an independent quarterly telephone survey in the Maritimes’ major cities. The Urban Report surveys were conducted from October 22 to November 10, 2019 in Halifax, Fredericton and Moncton.

The questions assessing consumer confidence in Halifax, Moncton, and Fredericton were asked of 400 adult residents in their respective cities. The overall results for each survey are accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times. The question on satisfaction with the municipal government was asked of 400 residents in Halifax, 200 residents in the City of Moncton, and 287 residents in the City of Fredericton during the same time period.
