HALIFAX, December 10, 2019: Just over half of Newfoundland and Labrador residents now express satisfaction for the performance of the provincial government led by Premier Dwight Ball, according to a recent survey conducted by Narrative Research.
Satisfaction among residents has jumped five points, up to 52% from 47% over the summer, representing the highest level of overall satisfaction rated during 2019. However, a minority indicate dissatisfaction, with 42% expressing this view.
In terms of decided voter intentions, results are fairly consistent since August, with the Liberal Party maintaining 42% of the vote, with the Progressive Conservative Party standing at 33% (compared with 32% in August). Support for the New Democratic Party stands at 24%, compared with 23% in August, at which time there had been a jump in support following the May election, when levels were at 7%.
Twenty-two percent of NL voters are undecided, 2% do not plan to vote in the next provincial election, and 4% refuse to state which party they support.
On the question of leadership, Ball remains the preferred choice of premier among 36% of voters. Less than one-quarter (23%) voiced preference for Ches Crosbie of the PC party, while two in ten named Alison Coffin of NDP as the preference choice for premier (19%).
Eleven percent of voters say they don’t know whom they prefer as premier, and 10% support none of the party leaders.
These results are part of Narrative Research’s Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent, quarterly telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 800 adult residents of Newfoundland and Labrador conducted from October 31 to November 22, 2019, with overall results accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
