As we approach one year into the global pandemic, Canadians were asked which province or territory has done the best job, and which has done the worst job, at managing the COVID-19 pandemic.
Perhaps not surprising given its lower case levels, provinces in the Atlantic region are collectively most often cited as having best managed the pandemic, with one-quarter of Canadians (24%) naming an Atlantic province. Fourteen percent of Canadians named British Columbia, while no other region was identified by more than one in ten. One-third of Canadians (34%) were unable to name any province or territory as having best managed the pandemic.
With the exception of those living in Ontario or Quebec, Canadians are most likely to name the province or region that they live in as having best managed the COVID-19 pandemic. Of note, residents of Ontario or Quebec are more likely than other Canadians to express uncertainty in terms of which province has best performed in this regard.
When considering which areas have done the worst job at managing the pandemic, results once again reflect the provinces that have been most dramatically impacted by the virus. One-third of Canadians named Quebec as worst managing the pandemic, while one-quarter (24%) named Ontario. Fifteen percent named provinces in the Prairie region as having done the worst job managing the pandemic. Of note, those residing in Ontario are most likely to name Quebec (38%) as having performed worst in managing the pandemic, while Quebec residents most often named their home province (30%), or state that they don’t know (38%).
Results are from an online survey conducted January 15 – 19, 2021, with 1,233 Canadians 18 years of age or older from the Logit Group’s Canadian Omnibus. Fielding every month, the Logit Group’s COVID-19 Omnibus surveys Canadians to ask their opinions and behaviours related to topical issues. Results were analyzed by Narrative Research. Data was weighted based on the 2016 Census, by gender, age, and region to reflect population characteristics in each province. As a non-probability sample (i.e., a panel sample where residents have joined a panel to share their opinions), and in accordance with CRIC Public Opinion Research Standards, a margin of error is not applied.
